Port Harcourt: World Book Capital 2014

Since its inception in 2001, the title “The World Book Capital” has been given to cities that offer programmes that foster the love of reading and the promotion of books. Port Harcourt in Nigeria, the first sub-Saharan country to receive the honor, was awarded the title for 2014 by UNESCO. A big year for Nigeria, since it is also celebrating its 100th year since its formation by the British government, this title reflects the momentous changes that are occurring in Nigeria and other African countries.

Tsehai Publishers has recently released a CD of poetry dedicated to Nelson Mandela to celebrate the legendary figure and his contributions to Africa.  An anti-apartheid revolutionary and a philanthropist, Mandela was the first black President of South Africa to be elected in a fully representative democratic election in the country.  Focusing on dismantling the legacy of apartheid in South Africa, Mandela worked to dispel inequality and institutionalized racism while fostering racial equality.
