Africa at 50: The AU Celebrates a Milestone

The 23rd of May culminates the end of the 50th anniversary year for the African Union (AU), an organization that envisions “an integrated, prosperous, and peaceful Africa, driven by its own citizens and representing a dynamic force in the global arena” and succeeded the Organisation for African Unity (OAU) in 2001.

Throughout the years, the AU has been an instrumental part of the development of a united and strong Africa and has been implementing policies and organizations to foster growth and change in the country. This 50 year celebration to commemorate all of the work they have done as an organization for the country by incorporating programmes and strategies for self-reliant development with the Largos Plan of Action, promoting the African Charter on Human and People’s Rights and the Grand Bay Declaration and Plan of Action on Human Rights, and establishing principles for the promotion of democracy and good governance in the continent through the 2000 Solemn Declaration on the Conference on Security, Stability, Development, and Cooperation — to name just a few of the many activities that the AU has been a part of.

To honor the AU and its legacy over the part 50 years, Tsehai Publishers is publishing Uniting a Continent, a book that offers an in-depth look at the creation of the organization, its founding members, member countries in Africa, and rare historical photos and documents. The book is the first of its kind and exemplifies the rich and unique cultural heritage of Africa. As we move into the 51st year of the organization, it is even more important to showcase all that the AU has done for Africa and all of the work that they continue to do. To reach as many people as possible, Tsehai Publishers has been engaged with an Indiegogo campaign to raise money to print more copies of Uniting a Continent and spread awareness.
