Port Harcourt: World Book Capital 2014

Port Harcourt: World Book Capital 2014

Since its inception in 2001, the title “The World Book Capital” has been given to cities that offer programmes that foster the love of reading and the promotion of books. Port Harcourt in Nigeria, the first sub-Saharan country to receive the honor, was awarded the title for 2014 by UNESCO. A big year for Nigeria, since it is also celebrating its 100th year since its formation by the British government, this title reflects the momentous changes that are occurring in Nigeria and other African countries.

To celebrate the occasion, a week-long festival, which started on April 23, was held to showcase various programmes that promote reading and other literary endeavors as well as the artistic talent of the country. Reading from the former Nigerian President to students, an international literature exhibition, opening remarks from Wole Soyinka, and the opening of the Port Harcourt Book Center are some of the activities that occurred.
Tsehai Publishers was very excited to be part of the festivities — Elias Wondimu, our founder, journeyed to Nigeria to be a part of the celebration by participation in the activities being held. It is truly wonderful to be able to be part of the positive changes that are occurring with the relationship between Africa and the world. After the opening ceremony, Nigeria will be hosting year-long events designed to improve literacy and the reading habits of the country. Congratulations to Port Harcourt!
